ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. — The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission is investigating the cause of an accident that killed a woman whose husband carried her out of the Pasquotank River near Weeksville.

Officials with Coast Guard Station Elizabeth City say they received a call Sunday afternoon from Pasquotank County 911, reporting an unmanned boat going in circles and people in the water.

The Coast Guard found Armsted Lassiter, 45, walking out of shallow water, carrying his 46-year-old wife, Maria Lassiter, who was unconscious. She was later pronounced dead at Albemarle Health hospital in Elizabeth City.

The couple is from South Mills in Camden County.
