HENDERSON, N.C. — Vance County authorities have arrested a Henderson woman in connection with a June house fire in which a man died, Sheriff Peter White said Thursday.

Ethel Watson, 54, of 1004 Beacon Ave., was charged with murder and arson. She was being held without bond in the Vance County jail.

Carlton Rudd Jr., 30, died in the June 7 fire at 3100 N.C. Highway 158 Business.

Rudd lived in the home with Watson and her son, Anthony Watson, White said. The Watsons escaped the burning house unharmed.

The Watsons moved to the Beacon Avenue address after the fire.

White declined to discuss details of the case, such as a possible motive for the slaying or what evidence led to Ethel Watson's arrest.

Anthony Watson, 36, was charged with being an accessory after the fact of murder and an accessory after the fact of arson. He also was being held without bond.
