Winning Carolina Cash 5 ticket yet to be claimed in Selma
Time is running out for one lucky person to claim their lottery jackpot.
Posted — UpdatedA Carolina Cash 5 ticket worth $164, 825, sold at the Brotherhood Market on South Pollack Street in Selma on Aug. 27, expires in a week.
“I think somebody probably came in and bought it, and don’t think they won; they didn’t ever check their ticket, or it got thrown away—that’s what I think,” said Raiford Edwards.
The North Carolina Education Lottery officials said nearly $28 million in lottery winnings went unclaimed last year; the majority was from small prize amounts.
Two tickets worth more than $100,000 were never claimed, according to lottery officials.
Mohamad al Wahishi—who helps run Brotherhood Market—said lottery sales have spiked 30 percent since the winning ticket was announced.
“I don’t think it’s going to be claimed because if he had it, they’d already have chased it,” al Wahishi said.
If the winnings are not claimed by Feb. 27, North Carolina law requires half of the money to be put into the state education fund; the other half will go back into the pool with lottery prizes.
The winning numbers on the Carolina Cash 5 ticket are 5-7-8-21-26.
