DURHAM, N.C. — Community leaders got a unique look Thursday at Durham Housing Authority developments.

Members of the Durham City Council participated in a bus tour through projects under development, including at Liberty Street, Forest Hills Heights and McDougald Terrace.

Many of the planned developments will have both market-rate and affordable price points.

Mayor Pro Tempore Mark-Anthony Middleton said that diversity is inspiring.

"No longer does affordable housing or low-income housing mean the outskirts, disconnected, pockets of poverty cut off from services in food deserts,” Middleton said. “We want to be neighbors.

“Everyone wants to live and be able to enjoy a show at [the Durham Performing Arts Center], or just grab some milk and jump on a bus."

The tour also provided a look inside the newly redone JJ Henderson Housing Center for Seniors at 807 South Duke St., and the nearly-finished Joyce building next door.

Together, those developments will form a complete campus.
