Wayne schools superintendent announces retirement

The Superintendent of Wayne County Public Schools announced his retirement Friday.

Officials said Steven Taylor, a 34-year veteran educator, made the surprise announcement during a meeting with principals, staff and other guests. He said he was leaving the post he’s held for 13 years to spend more time with his family.

“I would be remiss if I did not say that this was a difficult decision to make, especially with the continued support I have received from district stakeholders and all of the various members elected to our Board of Education throughout my administrative career,” he said in a statement.

His last day will be June 30.

“This is an exciting time for me and my family and I wish nothing but success for this school district and the students served,” Taylor said. “I am confident that the right person will be selected as my replacement and this district will continue to move forward in a positive way, especially with the many changes now being proposed in the public schools for the future.”
