DUDLEY, N.C. — A SWAT standoff at a Wayne County home ended without injuries on Friday night when a man who had kidnapped a woman and six children was taken into custody by authorities.

Deputies were dispatched around 9:45 p.m. to 102 Bird Dog Lane, Dudley, to a report of a domestic disturbance. When they arrived, a witness said she and her sister had come home from shopping when Steve Carlos Brown assaulted the sister.

Brown dragged the woman into the house and locked the door. The witness said she could still hear the two fighting and arguing inside.

Deputies on scene tried to make contact with the woman who was inside the house, but no one responded. Authorities later learned that Brown locked the woman and six children inside the house and wouldn't let them contact the officers.

The Wayne and Johnston County sheriffs' SWAT teams responded to the scene, and hostage negotiators tried for more than two hours to make contact with the people inside the house. Eventually, Johnston County SWAT officers used an armored vehicle to drive up to the front door to use a loud speaker in another attempt to make contact, but that was also unsuccessful.

SWAT members then approached the front door and saw the children inside the residence. Officers were able to get inside the home and secure the children.

As officers were in the house, Brown came into the room and was taken into custody.

Brown was charged with domestic assault and kidnapping. He was jailed under a $100,000 secured bond.
