CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Chapel Hill residents on Carr Street were without water Wednesday morning after a large water main broke Tuesday night in the area of North Columbia and Stephens streets.

North Columbia Street between Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Stephens Street was closed overnight Tuesday as crews repaired the pipe. The water main ruptured at about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Water service is expected to be restored by 7 a.m. Wednesday.

The water main break is the second reported in Chapel Hill in recent days. Greenlaw Hall at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was closed for more than a day after a water main broke near the building during Labor Day weekend.
