— Police on Tuesday issued warrants for the arrest of a Durham man in connection with a drive-by shooting Monday that left one man dead and a second man wounded.

The warrants charge Dante Lamar Terrell, 21, of Crest Street, with murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.

Terrell wasn't in custody Tuesday, and police asked anyone with information on his whereabouts to call the Durham Police Department at 919-560-4322, extension 29320, or Crime Stoppers at 919-683-1200.

Two men were walking on the 2800 block of Crest Street Monday afternoon when multiple shots were fired from a passing car, police said.

Nigel Scarlett, 25, of Webb Circle, was pronounced dead at the scene, and Kevin Maurice Davis, 26, of Price Avenue, was taken to Duke University Hospital.

A witness told WRAL News that a child getting off a school bus in the neighborhood found a handgun about three blocks from the shooting scene.

Police were awaiting tests results on the gun to confirm whether it was used in the shooting. Investigators have declined to comment on a possible motive.

I cannot believe Mayor Bill Bell tells the police they have to do something about murders in Durham! Brother Bell needs to go speak to the community that keeps him in his mayoral position and find out from them what the problem is. There is not one thing the police can do to prevent murder. That would be the job of the law makers.

You realize that if you murder someone in NC you are charged by the state, not the city. The laws regarding felonies are no different in Durham than they are in Cary or Greensboro.

"Barry Saunders at the N&O today ran a column claiming that if the murder victim is black in North Carolina then the criminal will only do an average of 7 years for the crime. I have no idea if any statistics back him up."

The man is funny to read only because it's just amazing people still think like he does. Just look at his son....the apple does not fall far from the tree.

boneymaroney13 - "All he has to say is he meant to hit someone else, not the victim. Then your 1st degree murger charge is out the window."

Umm... wouldn't that still be assault with a deadly weapon which the last time that I checked was a felony? Felony murder; first degree murder. I will ignore the rest of your comment about a plea deal for murder that would lead to probation and not jail time.

Well, time to offer new television sets and trips to Cozumel to all the warrant holding prize winners for Christmas. Round them all up.

heretatellya - "another candidate for the chair." I don't know about that. All he has to say is he meant to hit someone else, not the victim. Then your 1st degree murger charge is out the window. The Durham D/A's office will then oofer him a plea which he will take and shortly thereafter be back on the street.
