Warmth for Wake aims to keep the heat on

Warmth for Wake, an annual energy assistance program which provides fuel assistance for thousands of individuals from low-income households in Wake County, kicked off for the 34th time Monday. 

With snow already reaching North Carolina's mountains over the weekend, the 2011 weather could be colder than what the area has seen in recent years. 

In 2010, Warmth for Wake assisted an estimated 200 households throughout the county. Contributions received from individuals, groups and companies totaled $35,000 and more than 40 homes received free firewood. Since the campaign began in 1977, more than $1 million has been raised. 

Warmth for Wake recipients must be Wake County residents. Eligibility is determined through Wake County Human Services, taking into consideration all income and resources as well as expenses and emergency or special situations that may affect available income. Income guidelines are based on current poverty levels.
