Wake Tech students must be tobacco-free

Posted March 1, 2011

Wake Tech Community College initiated penalties Tuesday to enforce a three-year-old ban on tobacco use on campus.

Students found smoking or using tobacco of any kind on campus get a written reprimand for the first offense, probation for the second offense. A third strike means a three-day suspension from classes.

The school beefed up its security force to help with enforcement.

readme. your comparison was completely unnecessary. you sound like a loser.

anyway, this is ridiculous. if they would have a designated smoking area then there shouldn't be a problem. non-smokers...if you don't like smoke, then don't go to the designated smoking areas... it's really that simple.

Good! I get so irritated when I walk into or out of a store and have to walk through the smoke barrier of all the smokers standing by the doors of a store. Just because others want to defile their bodies, why should I have to smell it and God forbid, taste it when I walk by?

They are so worried about smelling smoke from a cig. out side???? What about all those bus fumes--car and truck fumes.....burning leaves, etc..Come on, get real !!! Quit trying to run people's private choices.........

Wake Tech used to offer smoking disposal receptacles, the cigarette butts still ended up on the ground EVERYWHERE. They also asked smokers to stay away from buildings when smoking, so that people who don't smoke don't have to smell it or breath it in. People still smoked wherever they wanted with no regard to the non-smokers. I have asthma, and am glad that Wake Tech is putting down the law on this. I shouldn't have to worry about getting sick, potentially having to go to the hospital - because an inconsiderate smoker is blowing smoke in my face.

Wait until July 1st. That's when the smoking ban in parks comes into effect

Are these students adults or children? If they are 18 and older the school should not have anything to say or do about someone using smokeless tobacco on campus or even smoking in their car. They can ban smoking in open campus for same reason they can ban in restaurants and bars, but smokeless does not endanger someone else.

This is so crazy! If you are outside why does it matter?

  • readme Mar 2, 2011

It's less of a crime to cross the border illegally and show up for class than it is to smoke outside, 50 feet from a building. I hate smelling smoke as much as the next guy, but if they are willing to leave the building into the elements and walk away from the building and dispose of their trash, then I say let them do it.

SMOKING IS LLEGAL !!! WHY AND HOW ARE THEY PUTTING SUCH SO CALLED LAWS INTO EFFECT..NEED TO USE THAT MONEY THEY ARE PAYING FOR MORE SMOKE POLICE INTO THE SCOOL SYSTEM...PRETTY SOON THEY WILL TELL YOU WHAT AND WHEN TO EAT, SLEEP AND DRINK....

I wonder how many people fail to realize that the school has no choice in the matter. The ban on smoking on a school campus is a legal ban. It is illegal to smoke on any school campus. This includes school parking lots as well.
