Wake's 'Read and Feed' program looks to expand after $10,000 gift
Wake County's "Read and Feed" program, which brings warm meals and books directly to low-income neighborhoods in the county, is looking to expand after receiving a $10,000 grant from the Ron E. and Jeanette R. Doggett Endowment.

Read and Feed's mobile classrooms, which are converted RVs, currently serve about 500 children at 20 different program sites. The RVs go to specific neighborhoods during the afternoon and evening hours Monday through Thursday.
The program is designed to help students retain knowledge learned during the school year while providing meals and books to children who might otherwise miss out.
"The whole idea behind Read and Feed is that transportation is not an option for these kids," Kati Mullan, the program's executive director, said. "I've been out in the field and I've been with these children, and they are so worth it. They are so appreciative of our program, and for so many of these children it's more than a reading program. It's a mentoring program as well."
