Wake Forest man sent to prison for health care fraud
A Wake Forest man was sentenced Friday to 58 months in prison for fraudulently obtaining Medicare payments for prescription drugs, authorities said Monday.
Posted — UpdatedSteven Thompson, 42, pleaded guilty in March to health care fraud. In addition to his prison sentence, he was ordered to repay the government $17,650.
Thompson enrolled in Medicare Part D in January 2006 for subsidized prescription drugs. Federal investigators determined that, between that time and June 2008, he used 104 physicians and 20 pharmacies to obtain 282 prescriptions for analgesics and narcotics. The value of the fraudulently obtained prescriptions was $45,195, authorities said.
"This defendant went to great lengths to hide his abuse through the use of many physicians and pharmacies," U.S. Attorney George Holding said in a statement. "This type of drug abuse and the fraudulent methods used to obtain the drugs places an even further burden on our already taxed government health care system, and we must remain vigilant to stop the abuse."
