WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A former employee of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center was charged Tuesday with stealing $114,000 in patient refund checks, police said.

Steven Byron Tisdale, 43, of 6000 Fairfield Oaks Lane in Pfafftown, was charged with embezzlement over $100,000.

Hospital administrators asked Winston-Salem police in April to investigate the alleged theft.

Investigators determined that Tisdale, who had worked for the hospital for 17 years, had cashed 219 checks between January and March that were intended to go to patients due refunds on their bills, police said.
