— A Wake Forest couple was sentenced Wednesday to prison after pleading guilty in the March death of their 17-month-old son, who authorities believe died of dehydration when left alone in a heated room.

Shandu Slaughter, 28, and Kristin Ann Wills, 21, both of 839 N. Franklin St., pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and felony child abuse.

Slaughter was sentenced to 23 to 37 months in prison. Willis was sentenced to 10 to 12 months in prison, followed by 30 months on probation.

Marcus Isaiah Wills was found dead in the family's home on March 20. An autopsy determined that the child had been left unattended in a heated room for several hours.

If I recall correctly, this was the case where the heater was found by investigators to be broken and the parents had no idea the room was heating up the way it did... That certainly is no excuse but it is possible the sentences reflect more in the case than we, the public, are aware of..

Hi colliedave - "the "good" thing is the guy will encounter prison justice"

Not necessarily. Criminals often band together by crime in prison, and protect one another.

    Sad but true.

Wish they could do something legally to the woman so she'd not have any more children.

The sentences are absurd, absolutely absurd - that the value of a child's life is so little in our justice system is a travesty.

Praying for any other children unfortunate enough to have either of these people for a parent.

    God bless.

The sentence does not fit the crime. This is outrageous.

It is such a shame that a child's life is worth so little. They should be treated the same way. Closed up in a hot room and left until they suffocate.

Very sad indeed..may the sweet baby rest in peace. As for his so called parents, they will have to answer to a higher judge one day.

How does any NC Citizen sit in court and think this is right? The Judge, The DA, a Spectator even? Was there no one in that court that spoke up for that dead child?
