Volunteers sought to clean up historic Hillsborough cemetery
The Alliance for Historic Hillsborough is looking for volunteers to help clean up one of North Carolina's historic burial grounds, the Old Town Cemetery.

The cemetery, which was established in 1757 and contains more than 150 graves, is overgrown with vegetation that needs to be cleared, officials said.
The cemetery is the final resting place for influential figures, including William Hooper, one of the three North Carolina signers of the Declaration of Independence, brick mason John Berry, who built the Orange County Courthouse, and Sarah Jane Kollock, the co-founder of the Nash-Kollock school.
The nonprofit group wants to recruit volunteers to work from 9 a.m. to noon on either June 7 or June 21. Volunteers are asked to wear protective gear, including long-sleeved shirts, long pants, gloves and close-toed shoes. They should also bring garden shears, rakes and brushes. Water will be provided.
The cemetery is at the northwest corner of Churton and Tryon streets.
