Vigil held for woman who died in Durham park shooting

The woman was shot early Friday morning. The shooting is currently under investigation.

DURHAM, N.C. — A vigil was held for a woman who died in a park shooting Sunday.

Durham Police Department responded to a call regarding a shooting near a Durham park on Knox Street Friday, where they found the woman.

The woman was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, where she later died.

The vigil started at 5 p.m. and ended shortly afterward.

Those in attendance wanted to honor the woman's life, even though the never knew her.

"Right now the name of the woman has not been released," said Marissa Minnick, a neighbor in Duke Park. "We're just gathering to have a moment of silence to give some dignity and respect to this woman."

In addition to the vigil, the Neighborhood Association is planning to reopen their initiatve to get better street lighting in the area, where there are several nearby houses.

The shooting is under investigation.
