SANFORD, N.C. — Sanford residents held a candelight vigil Thursday evening on the street where a 17-year-old girl was fatally shot in the head.

Witnesses said they heard multiple shots before police officers found Shamika Nikkia Lett, 17, lying in the street at Hickory Avenue and Fourth Street Wednesday evening. She died after being flown to UNC Hospitals.

Residents said they burned candles, prayed and cried together at the vigil. A teddy bear and boquet of roses lay next to a sign with pictures of Lett.

Police have not discussed a motive in the shooting or said if any arrests have been made.
