CLINTON, N.C. — Sampson County authorities on Tuesday identified the construction worker killed last week when the roof of a Clinton church collapsed.

Jose Guadalupe Garcia, 35, was operating machinery at the site of a new sanctuary for Mount Vernon Baptist Church, at 3790 Faison Highway, when 32 roof trusses crumbled on top of him.

Two other workers, Darium Rony of Wallace and Adrian Norris Jr. of Chinquapin, were working on the rafters when the trusses gave way. They were taken to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Both have been released.

Six other construction workers were uninjured.

Workers on a framing crew were nailing two-by-fours onto roof trusses to stabilize the structure when it collapsed, officials said.

Inspectors with the state Division of Occupational Safety and Health haven't determined the cause of the accident.
