HENDERSON, N.C. — Vance-Granville Community College officials say they are conducting an internal review into how they handled Monday's lockdown after someone reported a gunman on the main campus.

"One person on campus reported to VGCC security officers that another person on campus had displayed a gun to him in a threatening manner," school officials said in a statement Tuesday. "Many of the details about exactly what happened are still unclear and are the subject of an ongoing criminal investigation."

Students told WRAL News that they did not receive any texts or emails about the lockdown, which was lifted by 12:30 p.m. The school's website made no mention of it. The school did post about the incident on Facebook about three hours after it was over.

"I was worried why there wasn't anything sent out," said student Amber Batten, who was alone in a classroom when the lockdown started. "An administrator came in ... and she took me in a classroom with other students. They just told us to go in the corner, stay away from the window, shut the lights off and stay quiet."

"They came around and locked all the doors. They did the procedure like they're supposed to," Batten added.

VGCC leaders said they are evaluating "what did and did not work in this particular situation."

"Some students, faculty and staff expressed concerns that they were not receiving timely information about what was occurring," school officials said. "The college administration acted out of concern for public safety by not releasing any premature or inaccurate information, while events were still unfolding."

Campus buildings were evacuated and afternoon classes were canceled. Evening classes resumed as normal Monday.
