— A deputy died in a single-vehicle crash north of Henderson while attempting to stop a reported reckless driver late Saturday, said Vance County Sheriff Peter White.

Authorities said that Deputy Brandon Scott Coker, 26, set off in his cruiser after receiving an alert about a reckless driver in the area shortly after 10 p.m. His cruiser ran off Nutbush Road and struck a tree, near N.C. Highway 39.

"Deputy Coker was a fine young officer who will be missed by all who knew him," White said.

May God bless his family and his coworkers.

Brandon died doing what he loved. If had been told that he wasn't coming back tomorrow, he still would have suited up anyway. My thoughts and prayers are with his family along with Peter and the troops.

We will miss you deeply. The twinkle in your eye, and the crooked smile will be with us no longer, but the memories will last for ages. I guess those file cabinets can be made into a memorial for you now. Vance County was a better place for having you there. Join your brethren and tell Terry Lyles he is still missed and thought of often.
