APEX, N.C. — U.S. Highway 64 in Apex reopened Monday evening after utility crews spent hours working to remove damaged power lines from the road.

According to officials with the Apex Police Department, a dump truck, driven by Ashuntee Derod Baker, of Chapel Hill, came through the intersection Monday morning and took the lines down near Jenks Road. Baker had not put his truck bed down when he caught the power lines.

No other vehicles were involved, and no one was injured.

Baker was cited for careless and reckless driving and no operator's license. According to the state Highway Patrol, DMV records show his license is valid through 2019, but that there is missing paperwork.

While the crews worked to repair the lines, power was out to surrounding homes and businesses.

"We are losing sales of course, we lost power, we have no fuel sales. We are able to take cash only," said Anita Brooks, the manager at a nearby convenience store.

For some people, it was a minor Monday morning inconvenience but for Latisha Bell, who desperately needed gas, it was a crisis.

"Let me get gas before I get back on the highway, and I can't even get gas," she said. "I have to find another gas station."
