RALEIGH, N.C. — Pastor Russell Sanders canceled services Sunday at Union Baptist Church, and volunteers were working to clean up after the church was vandalized overnight.

Raleigh police arrested Airris Hinton, 44, and charged him with breaking and entering, property damage and probation violations.

Sanders said Hinton was a former member of the congregation. Hinton's record with the state Department of Correction dates back to 1994 and includes multiple assault charges and prison time.

Sanders said nine stained-glass windows were broken in the church, at 600 S. Saunders St. He also reported damage to an air conditioner, some pictures, dry wall and an altar chair.
