BUTNER, N.C. — A federal agency has announced that John Umstead Hospital is no longer in danger of losing its Medicare and Medicaid funding.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services ruled that the psychiatric facility has come into compliance with its regulations. CMS will not take any more action against the hospital, said Umstead Hospital Director Stephen Oxley.

"I congratulate our staff for their hard work and commitment in resolving the issues that CMS cited," Oxley said.

Oxley said administrators had submitted a plan of action to correct standard-level deficiencies noted by CMS inspectors. Those deficiencies were of the lowest severity recorded by CMS, he said.

"We are very pleased at the outcome of this action and proud of the fine work and the staff of the John Umstead Hospital," said James Osberg, chief of the hospital's state-operated services.
