DURHAM, N.C. — Police shut down U.S. Highway 70 for a short time Friday afternoon because of a wreck.

An eastbound 1992 Toyota driven by Theophilus Parker of Durham ran off the right side of U.S. 70 and went out of control, police said. The car spun back across the eastbound lanes into the westbound lanes, where it collided with a 2009 Dodge driven by Tricia Ann Thomason of Durham, police said.

Thomason was treated at the scene and released. Parker was taken to Duke University Hospital, where she was listed in critical condition Saturday.

The highway was closed between the Miami Boulevard/U.S. 70 Business split and East End Avenue from about 12:15 p.m. until after 1:30 p.m. Traffic also was diverted during that time at the U.S. 70 intersections with Cheek Road and N.C. Highway 98.

No charges had been filed by Friday evening, and the wreck was still under investigation, police said.
