ZEBULON, N.C. — Athletes and fans will gather at East Wake High School Tuesday evening to pray for two teens who were victims of weekend automobile wrecks.

Patrick Michael McLaughlin Jr., 17, of Zebulon, a student at East Wake, died Saturday in a single-car crash. McLaughlin vehicle veered off U.S. Highway 64 near Lizard Lick Road and hit a guardrail, then overcorrected and hit a tree, state troopers said.

On Friday, four teens were involved in a wreck in Knightdale. While police have not released their names, Police Chief Shawn Brown said the driver had been charged with careless and reckless operation of a motor vehicle and driving while impaired. One person was taken to WakeMed. Brown said Monday that the victim was in critical condition.

A woman who identified herself as a friend of the victim’s family said that students from Knightdale planned to attend the soccer game between East Wake and Broughton Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. to present banners to the parents of the injured student and to McLaughlin’s parents.
