RALEIGH, N.C. — Two women and a dog were bitten by foxes this week in a northwest Raleigh neighborhood near Crabtree Valley Mall, prompting Raleigh police to urge residents to stay away from wild animals and have all pets vaccinated for rabies.

On Monday, a 48-year-old woman reported being bitten near her home on Brookhaven Drive. The next day, a 90-year-old woman and her dog were bitten on Wildwood Street.

Animal control caught a fox in the area that tested positive for rabies.

In Cumberland County, health officials issued a similar alert after a dead fox was found on the corner of Forsythe Street and Purdue Drive in Fayetteville. A fox recently attacked a group of dogs in the area. It is unknown if the fox that was found had rabies.

Police offered these tips to prevent animal attacks:

  • Do not leave food or trash outside, unless it is in a trash can with a tight-fitting lid.
  • If a pet is fed outside, do not leave food out overnight.
  • Do not leave pets outdoors unattended.
  • Report any animals that are behaving unusually to authorities immediately.
