SMITHFIELD, N.C. — Two Smithfield-Selma High School students were arrested Tuesday after they were found carrying BB guns, school officials said Wednesday.

A 14-year-old boy and 16-year-old boy were charged with possession of BB guns. Their names were not released because they are juveniles.

A spokeswoman with Johnston County Schools said Smithfield-Selma High and Smithfield Middle School were put on a brief lockdown Tuesday morning at the request of law enforcement after they received a report of a man possibly armed with a gun in the vicinity of the schools.

Smithfield police officers and Johnston County sheriff’s deputies conducted a search of the schools and surrounding area. They received information that led them to the two students.

“We appreciate the diligence of law enforcement and our school staff in investigating this situation and continuing to ensure the safety of our students,” Johnston County Schools Superintendent Ed Croom said in a statement. “The partnership between our school system and other county and town agencies is essential to effectively educating our students in a safe environment ."
