Two more suspects arrested in Fayetteville convenience store killing

Kelly Eugene Elliott, 31, was taken into custody at about 11:45 p.m. Wednesday at a home in Conroe, Texas, about 40 miles north of Houston, by members of a U.S. Marshals Service task force. Minutes later, Joseph DeShawn Haskins, 21, was arrested by Fayetteville police during a traffic stop on Murchison Road.

Both men are charged with first-degree murder, first-degree kidnapping and robbery with a dangerous weapon in the Sept. 1 death of Errol Williams.

According to investigators, Williams, 27, a Navy veteran and father of two, stopped at a Kangaroo station on Bragg Boulevard to ask for directions when he was forced into his car, kidnapped, robbed and shot a few blocks away.

"This has been a relentless investigation – a lot of folks have put a lot of hours in," said Lt. Todd Joyce of the Fayetteville Police Department. "At the same time, we wanted to ensure that our community knew we were doing everything in our power to find out who was responsible for this crime."

Police Chief Harold Medlock held three news conferences about the case within 10 days, and more than a dozen updated news releases were issued in that time.

"It is a huge sigh of relief for the folks here, for our community. A lot of thanks goes out to people who called and gave information,” Joyce said.

He declined to say what led investigators to Texas and the capture of Elliott, whom police described as the trigger-man in Williams' death.

"That'll come out in the course of the investigation whether he knew someone down there or whether he had a family or had retreated there, thinking maybe that's a safe location," he said.

Elliott was in the Montgomery County, Texas, jail Thursday morning awaiting extradition to Fayetteville.

Authorities on Wednesday arrested Kourtney Terrell Reed, 20, who is also charged with first-degree murder, first-degree kidnapping and robbery with a dangerous weapon in the case.

Two other men accused of committing crimes with Elliott and helping him steal the security video equipment from the Kangaroo station hours after Williams' death were taken into custody last week.

Williams' sister, Sadie Everett, said she can breathe easier knowing the men suspected of killing her brother are in jail. Still, she said, her two nephews, 3-year-old Kwamori and 1-year-old Errol Jr., still have a hard time dealing with the fact their father won't come home again.

"He cried himself to sleep," Everett said of Kwamori.
