WENDELL, N.C. — Two people were killed Monday afternoon in a three-vehicle wreck on U.S. Highway 264 at Wendell Boulevard in Wake County, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

A Honda Civic traveling west on U.S. 264 rear-ended a Chevrolet Aveo around 4:20 p.m., lost control and began to skid sideways, troopers said. As it crossed into the far left lane, a flatbed tractor-trailer struck the Honda, authorities said.

The driver, 21-year-old Roxanne Swanner, and passenger, 29-year-old Santez Keys, both of Washington, were pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Aveo, Cealous Conyers, of Raleigh, was heading home from work when the Civic hit him, he said. Suddenly, he saw the truck plow into the Civic.

"I could hear the air brake and everything," he said. "The truck was pushing the vehicle and I could see it through my rear-view mirror."

It wasn't clear whether speed or wet, rainy weather were factors in the wreck.

Neither Conyers nor the driver of the truck were injured.
