BROADWAY, N.C. — Two pickups collided head-on on U.S. Highway 421 outside Broadway on Monday afternoon, killing both drivers, authorities said.

A westbound GMC truck driven by Thomas Ray of Bunnlevel collided with an eastbound Ford driven by Elinito Saustegui of Sanford on U.S. 421 near the Swanns Station Road intersection, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol said.

A unidentified motorcyclist traveling behind the Ford swerved to avoid the crash and was thrown from his motorcycle. He was airlifted to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill for treatment of what authorities said appear to be non-life-threatening injuries.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
