MORRISVILLE, N.C. — Two people were injured in a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 40 West that temporarily closed three lanes near Exit 285 at Aviation Parkway on Thursday morning.

Authorities say a car ran off the road around 6 a.m. and struck a guardrail, causing a tire to fly off and hit a car driving by. The first car then drifted back into the roadway and was rear-ended by a third vehicle.

The driver of the first car was taken to Duke University Hospital’s trauma unit with possible head injuries. The driver of the third car was taken to WakeMed with unknown injuries.

Troopers said charges were pending, but no other information was released.
