SPRING LAKE, N.C. — Two people suffered serious burns after an explosion in a shed at their Spring Lake home.

Duane Lee, the father of Kortney Lee, said his daughter and her boyfriend, Anthony Foxworth, were taken to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill after the blast, at 8335 Elliott Bridge Road, around 10 p.m. Saturday.

Kortney Lee, 20, suffered burns on half her body, Duane Lee said, and Foxworth, 31, was also badly burned – although Duane Lee did not say to what extent.

They were both listed in critical condition Monday, a hospital spokeswoman said.

It's unclear what caused the explosion.

The Harnett County Sheriff's Office said Monday that detectives with the Criminal and Narcotics Investigation Division are investigating the explosion.

Duane Lee said he didn't know what might have caused the blast.

"When I found out, I went straight to the hospital, and I haven't heard anything yet," he said.

Neighbors said investigators spent most of Sunday at the home – arriving around 1 a.m. and not leaving until around 4 p.m.
