Posted — UpdatedSOUTHERN PINES, N.C. — Authorities were investigating the deaths of two people found Monday inside a burned-out home in Southern Pines.
A neighbor, Antone Morrison, said a man knocked on his door in the middle of the night, bleeding from the head and asked for help. The pair returned to the home at 390 W. Lowe Ave. to find it engulfed in flames.
"It wasn't no decision," Morrison said. "Once you see somebody like that, that's the first thing you need to do. You try to do what's right and what's for the community. We got to look out for each other."
Firefighters were called at about 3 a.m. and had the fire under control by 6 a.m.
A third person, a woman, was found in the home and taken to a hospital suffering from smoke inhalation. She is expected to recover from her injuries.
Authorities did not immediately release the identities of the dead, but they said that they were not the people listed as the owners of the property.
