SMITHFIELD, N.C. — Two people in Johnston County face charges in separate child-related crimes.

A Willow Spring man has been arrested on charges that he inappropriately touched an 8-year-old child.

The Johnston County Sheriff's Office arrested Diego Cruz Lopez, 63, of Zoai Place, on Monday on one count of felony taking indecent liberties with a minor.

He was jailed under a $40,000 bond.

In a separate case, investigators also charged Erika D. Todd, 31, of Kenly, with assault on a child under 12 after she allegedly assaulted her 3-year-old daughter in front of a deputy.

Authorities said she "grabbed" the child and picked her up in a "violent manner."

Todd was also charged with malicious conduct by a prisoner after she allegedly tried to spit on a deputy several times.
