FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A mother and her two young sons died in a Fayetteville house fire early Thursday.

The fire occurred around 2 a.m. at a home in the 6400 block of Portsmouth Drive.

When firefighters arrived, the single-story home was engulfed in flames, according to a report. Officials said six people were trapped inside.

When firefighters searched the home, they found three people had died, including brothers, ages 5 and 9, and their 30-year-old mother. Three other family members -- including cousins of the deceased -- made it out, a family member said.

The Fayetteville Fire Department is investigating the cause of the fire along with state and federal investigators.
