SPRING LAKE, N.C. — Two men from South Carolina were charged late Friday with robbing an ABC store in Spring Lake and leading authorities on a chase, police said.

Brandon Hampton, 29, and Mickey Devel Giles, 37, both of Florence, were each charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon and second-degree kidnapping.

According to Spring Lake police, Hampton and Giles robbed the ABC store on Spring Lane at about 6:45 p.m.

Moments after the robbery, a clerk from the store flagged down a police officer who was patrolling the area.

The officer pursued Hampton down 2nd Street in Spring Lake before he got into a 2005 Chrysler 300C parked off the road. Hampton was driving the Chrysler, police said.

Spring Lake police officers chased the car through Spring Lake to Main Street, where an officer used a spike strip to deflate the car's tires. The car continued south on Bragg Boulevard to Fort Bragg, where it turned on Randolph Street.

Hampton and Giles were taken into custody at the Highway 295 construction site. An unknown amount of cash taken from the ABC store was recovered on 2nd Street, and a gun used in the incident was found by Fort Bragg authorities early Saturday on Randolph Street.

Hampton and Giles were in the Cumberland County jail early Saturday being held on $100,000 secured bonds.

Hampton and Giles are also persons of interest in several recent robberies in Spring Lake, authorities said.
