Verjuan Brooks, charged with murder in fatal Fuquay wreck
RALEIGH, N.C. — Two people have been charged in the December death of a man who police previously said was killed fleeing from Fuquay-Varina officers.

Aaron Lameak Hester-Bay, 20, was killed Dec. 26 in a wreck on Hilltop Road in Fuquay-Varina. Police said they had stopped him for speeding, but he drove off at a high rate of speed as the officer approached his car.

The officer later found the car had run off a curve in the road and hit a tree.

Verjuan Orion Brooks, 22, no address available, was charged with second-degree murder in Hester-Bay's death.

Courtney Natesia Surles, 22, of 502 Smithwood St. in Fuquay-Varina, was charged with being an accessory after the fact of murder, felony conspiracy and obtaining property by false pretense. Police said she drove Brooks away from the wreck and later tried to help him obtain medical treatment at WakeMed by using a stolen identity.
