BENSON, N.C. — Authorities on Tuesday released the name of a man who drowned a day earlier while swimming in Tucker Lake near Benson.

Johnston County sheriff’s deputies said Clifford Bradley Lee, 24, of Fayetteville, was swimming with his fiancée in the lake off Allens Crossroads Road about 3:30 p.m. Monday when they began having trouble. It appeared both were weak swimmers, deputies said.

The woman was able to get out of the water, but Lee continued to struggle. A lifeguard and bystanders helped get him out of the water.

He was taken to Johnston Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
