BENSON, N.C. — State troopers said that a 21-year-old driver fell asleep at the wheel on Interstate 40 West near Benson, causing a wreck that overturned her car and injured three people Sunday morning.

The 2009 Chevrolet passenger car ran off the right side of I-40 at exit 325 to N.C. Highway 242 shortly before 9 a.m., troopers said. The car struck an embankment and overturned, landing upside down.

Juanita Williams, of Raleigh, and her two passengers suffered non-life-threatening injuries. They were taken to WakeMed.

Williams told troopers they were traveling to Raleigh from Myrtle Beach and hadn't slept the night before.

Troopers charged Williams with reckless driving.
