Toilet Paper Noose Found at N.C. State
North Carolina State University police found a small noose made of toilet paper hanging in a restroom stall in a campus building Thursday morning, Chancellor James Oblinger said in a statement.
Posted — UpdatedPolice found the 10-inch-long noose in the Sullivan Shops Building at about 8:30 a.m. The building, off Sullivan Drive, is part of the university's motor pool and is accessible only by employees with keys.
"We want to resist the temptation to overreact to what appears to be an isolated incident. This could be someone’s idea of a prank, or it might constitute a crime," Oblinger said. "In either case, it is inappropriate. This is an act that has become symbolic of racial hatred."
The case is under investigation by campus police. The perpetrator could face criminal charges in addition to university discipline, Oblinger said.
"There is no room for this kind of action on the N.C. State campus. Even if it is intended as a prank, it is disruptive and an offense to a safe learning and working environment," he said.
