Tires fuel intense Durham building fire
Tires and flammable liquids helped fuel an intense blaze Sunday night that destroyed a commercial building in Durham, authorities said.

No one was hurt, but a dog died in the fire at 407 Old Oxford Road.
Durham fire officials said firefighters arrived about 8:30 p.m. to find smoke pouring from doors and windows of the one-story structure, which houses D's Tobacco and Grocery, Hernandez Used Tires and an auto repair business.
"Due to the heavy fire load of tires and flammable liquids, the fire quickly intensified," Deputy Fire Chief Chris Iannuzzi said in a statement.
Hydrants from two locations were needed to help battle the blaze. It was under control in about an hour, but it flared again because of flames hidden between the three roofs on the building, Iannuzzi said.
Thirty-six firefighters were called to the blaze, and crews remained on the scene until 4 a.m.
Firefighters were able to save several cars, including an $80,000 antique. A pit bull that guarded one of the stores perished.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
