RALEIGH, N.C. — Raleigh police say three people were shot Thursday afternoon in southeast Raleigh, prompting three area schools to temporarily go on lockdown.

Jim Sughrue, a spokesman for the Raleigh Police Department, said officers responded around 2:20 p.m. to the area of Coleman and Tipton streets and that the three victims were found at various locations within a few blocks from there.

None of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening, Sughrue said.

Investigators are looking for a man they described as in his late teens to early 20s, standing about 6 feet tall and weighing about 185 pounds.

Police said he was wearing a white jacket with black writing or graphics on it, and he was last seen on foot headed toward Rock Quarry Road.

It's not immediately clear where the shooting happened, but residents who live in the area said it appeared the victims ran after being shot.

One stumbled nearby to the Helping Hand Mission, at 623 Rock Quarry Road, where employees there described him as bleeding from the legs. Another was picked up on nearby Cumberland Street, a neighbor there said.

"I heard pop, pop, pop, pop, pop," said Sylvia Wiggins, who operates the Helping Hand Mission. "I tell you what, it was a bloody scene."

The shooting happened shortly before Helen Montague Checked on her family's rental property nearby.

"It's actually a nice neighborhood," she said. "It's just that people come from other places and do what they do and then leave."

Wiggins said the area needs more vigilance from police.

"This side of Raleigh, southeast, right in this little hub, needs more attention," she said.

Police haven't said if the shooter and the victims knew one another nor have they commented on a possible motive.

Ligon Middle School, Hunter Elementary School and Carnage Middle School were placed on a lockdown as a precaution, the school system said. It was lifted around 3:15 p.m.
