GARNER, N.C. — Three men were arrested for breaking and entering a home after a brief police chase Monday afternoon.

A citizen contacted police to report suspicious persons and a suspicious vehicle on Oakwater Drive, where a home break-in was reported, near Hall Boulevard at about 1 p.m., police said. Garner police officer Sonny Roberson spotted the suspicious vehicle and attempted to stop it, but the driver sped off, police said.

The short police pursuit ended after the vehicle collided with a ditch embankment, and two people jumped and ran from the vehicle, police said.

The driver, Howard Lee Covington, 21, of Raleigh, was apprehended by Roberson’s canine partner, Bear, police said. Covington is charged with felony breaking and entering a residence and several traffic related violations.

Miles Jamel Sanders, 25, of Smithfield and Melvin Eugene Ingram, 29, of Raleigh are each charged with felony breaking and entering a residence.

Police said items stolen from the Oakwater Drive home were found in the vehicle Covington was driving.
