CARTHAGE, N.C. — A 17-year-old died Thursday morning after hanging himself in the Moore County Detention Center, authorities said.

William Andrew Jordan died at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill at about 8:15 a.m. He was taken to the hospital Wednesday night after a detention officer found him hanging in his cell, authorities said.

Jordan surrendered to North Carolina probation officers on Monday and was put in the jail on a $25,000 bond. He had been placed on probation for 18 months in May after pleading guilty to two misdemeanor charges, authorities said.

There were no other inmates in the cell with Jordan when he was found, authorities said.

The death is the second hanging at the jail in less than three months. Murder suspect Jessica Denise White, 24, of Cameron, died in June, two days after she was found hanging from a shower rod in her cell.

The State Bureau of Investigation is reviewing the latest incident.
