DURHAM, N.C. — Police said Friday that they have arrested a man who they believe impersonated an officer to trick Durham businesses out of money.

Timothy Scott Liptrap, 43, no address available, was charged Wednesday with two counts each of impersonating a law enforcement officer and obtaining property by false pretense. He was being held Friday in the Durham County jail under a $600,000 bond.

More charges are pending, police said.

Liptrap also might be linked to similar crimes in Gastonia and Graham and in Knoxville, Tenn., police said.
