Suspect charged in overnight Raleigh shooting

Paul Emanuel Gainey faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and possession of a firearm by a felon in connection with a shooting early Monday that injured Alshawn Martel Thomas.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Raleigh police arrested a man Monday afternoon in connection with a shooting that injured a man.

Paul Emanuel Gainey, 23, of 71716 Rawls Drive, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury in the case.

Officers responding to the 3100 block of Kingstree Court shortly before 2 a.m. found Alshawn Martel Thomas, 28, with multiple gunshot wounds.

He was taken to WakeMed, where he was listed in critical condition Monday morning.

Gainey was also charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

He was being held at the Wake County Detention Center Monday night under a $350,000 bond.

Authorities haven't released a motive for the shooting but have said that a preliminary investigation indicated it was not random.
