— Sanford police are investigating an off-campus shooting near Lee County High School Thursday morning.

A ninth-grade student was taken to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill for treatment, school officials said.

In a news release, the Lee County School System said the shooting appeared to be accidental.

Lee County High School and Bragg Street Academy were placed on alert, but operations continued on a normal schedule after law enforcement officers determined there was no risk to students at either campus.

It was unclear whether charges would be filed or if anyone was arrested.

This was horrible - we have been in crisis meetings all day! The crazy thing is on yesterday we received a hoax email - it stated one of our kids was in a car accident and shot afterwards. So much is happening within the school systems. Check out the illnois shooting.

Where did the student get the gun? Yes, once they investigate, I believe there should be a charge. A gun cannot shoot itself.

No I did not see the site where Lee couny jail was on fire. I just wonder why did they remove it.

I hope the student is ok. Looks like today is the day for Lee County.

By the way did anyone see that the Lee County Jail was on fire on this site then it disappeared?
