ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — A 60-year-old clerk was struck in the head with a gun during the robbery of a Kangaroo Gas convenience store along Wesleyan Boulevard early Thursday.

The clerk told police that three men entered the store at 1830 N. Wesleyan Blvd. around 1:20 a.m. One carrying a handgun walked behind the counter, fired once through the store window and hit the clerk in the head with the gun, he said.

The men demanded money, but the clerk couldn't open the cash registry because of his head injury, police said.

The men then fled on foot toward the area of Medlin Motors. A K-9 search didn't turn up any suspects.

The clerk was transported by ambulance to Nash General Hospital, where he was treated and released.
