Steady rain to taper off this evening

The steady rain that fell over the Triangle Friday will taper off through the evening, WRAL meteorologist Mike Maze said.

RALEIGH, N.C. — The steady rain that fell over the Triangle Friday will taper off through the evening, WRAL meteorologist Mike Maze said.

"The extent of the rain will be less widespread, but we will continue to see spotty showers," he said.

A damp weather pattern that has dominated the week developed into a steady downfall Friday afternoon in Raleigh. The rain has soaked the ground across central North Carolina and forced dozens of high schools to reschedule football games from Friday night to Monday.

Maze said those who play and the fans who watch them won't need to worry about thunder and lightning. "The threat is very small. It's unlikely," he said.

The rain, and the chance for localized flash flooding, will continue into the evening, WRAL Meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner said.

A flash flood watch is in effect through midnight for some counties in the northeastern quadrant of the state.

Gardner said some areas could see as much as two inches of rain.

More than an inch of rain fell over the Triangle on Friday.

"We're going to have more than just a little rain in some places," she said. "We could see 1-2 inches of rain and we've had rain on and off over the last several days. The area is primed for some potential flooding later in the day."

Rain chances hang around this weekend but chances for heavy precipitation will taper off on Saturday and Sunday as highs climb back into the low 80s.

Lows will stay in the upper 60s to near 70 over the next several days.
