RALEIGH, N.C. — The new North Carolina sex-offender registry Web site is getting plenty of traffic, state Attorney General Roy Cooper announced Monday .
Since the Department of Justice relaunched the site with a new look April 23, visitors have conducted more than 500,000 searches to see if sex offenders live near their homes or children’s schools.
The numbers include 278,000 people who used a new feature that allows people to view maps and aerial photographs that show offenders’ home addresses.
More than 4,200 people have signed up for e-mail alerts when a sex offender moves near an address they specify. People in Raleigh signed up for the most e-mail alerts, followed by Charlotte, Cary and Durham.
